Battery Archaeology: What I Found in the Bilge

Battery Archaeology: What I Found in the Bilge

Today’s dig site: the battery compartment. What I found can only be described as “historical.”

Corroded terminals. Crusty connections. Wires that have clearly seen things. If batteries could talk, these ones would just sigh.

Corroded battery terminals

Lesson one for fellow rookies: before you trust anything electrical on an old boat, look at the terminals. If they’re wearing a fuzzy white-and-green sweater, that’s corrosion, and it’s a problem.

Next step: figure out what stays, what goes, and how to do it without starting a fire. I’ll share what I learn — properly, once I learn it.

Rookie disclaimer: I’m not an electrician. When in doubt, ask a marine pro.
